The History of our Brands: Mr. Transmission

For over 60 years Mr. Transmission has been a leader in the transmission repair industry. We are known for our professionalism and quality work that is backed by our nationwide warranty. While we all know the great service provided and trusted today the history of where Mr. Transmission came from is a unique one.

The brand was first founded in 1956 by Nelson Tribue in Nashville, TN. During this time Nelson opened a few company owned stores throughout the Nashville area and in 1967 Joe Dockery, an investor, came on as a partner and grew the brand. All stores were company owned stores and in 1968 Joe bought out Nelson and purchased the franchise system Greyson Rose Transmission from Birmingham, AL. Joe turned all the shops into Mr. Transmission Company owned shops with the exception of 4. Those 4 shops would become Mr. Transmission’s first franchisees: Ron Formby in Savannah, GA, Ed Tintlenot in Tuscaloosa, AL, LJ Basher in Opelika, AL and Tommy Dellinger in Albany, GA. In 1976 the company decided to franchise all shops, with a few shops being used as training facilities. The first new franchised location was purchased by Jim Strong in Albany, GA. Today Both Ron Formby and Jim Strong, while they might have retired and are no longer franchisees, are still involved in the Mr. Transmission franchise system; helping out franchisees with their outside sales programs and helping the support center.

By the mid 80’s the Mr. Transmission brand had reached an excess of 144 franchised shops, but in 1989 bankruptcy hit and they were left with a total of 40 locations. In 1990 Dennis and Cecilia Moran of Moran Industries purchased the rights to Mr. Transmission. This was their first franchise system they purchased, beforehand they were in the transmission repair business and selling rebuilt transmissions nationwide. After the purchase they started touring around the country to meet all the current and past franchise owners. From this they were able to gain back the confidence of 25 lost franchisees giving them a total of 65 franchised locations by the end of 1990. After this Dennis, Cecilia and their Daughter, and current CEO, Barbara transitioned the Mr. Transmission Headquarters from Nashville, TN to its current location in Midlothian, IL.

Since the purchase Moran Family of Brands has nurtured and growed the Mr. Transmission Brand. We are proud to have them apart of our franchise family!
